About The Black Altar

A cultural healing initiative rooted in Black spiritual traditions.

The Black Altar is a community-based project offering free, culturally grounded healing experiences for Black people. Our work responds to a deep need for rest, spiritual care, and emotional well-being—especially among communities historically excluded from safe, affirming support.

We design healing spaces that reconnect participants with practices passed down through generations: sound healing, tarot, astrology, guided movement, ritual, and communal reflection. These aren’t trends or luxuries. They are time-honored methods of survival, repair, and joy within the African diasporic lineage.

Founded and led by artist and spiritual practitioner VULGAR DREAMER, The Black Altar uplifts Black healers while creating accessible spaces where people can gather, grieve, celebrate, and remember their wholeness. Each offering is carefully curated to invite calm, self-connection, and collective care.

We center Black people across all gender identities, ages, and spiritual experiences. Many of our participants have never attended a sound bath or ritual circle before. They come seeking ease—and leave having touched something sacred within themselves.

Thanks to public funding and values-aligned partners, all programming is offered free of charge. We’re proud to be part of a growing movement that recognizes spiritual care as a public good and healing as a vital form of cultural preservation.

At its core, The Black Altar is a space of restoration. We are building community trust, investing in Black wellness, and offering a model of care that is culturally specific, spiritually meaningful, and rooted in liberation.
