About The Black Altar Project
A cultural initiative rooted in Black spiritual traditions.
The Black Altar Project is a community-based organization that supports cultural renewal through Black diasporic practices. The project creates free, accessible spaces where Black people can engage inherited traditions that have long supported meaning-making, continuity, and collective orientation within Black community life.
The work centers practices passed down through generations, including sound, tarot, astrology, guided movement, ritual, and communal reflection. These practices are not trends or luxuries. They are established cultural systems that have supported survival, interpretation, and connection within African diasporic lineages.
Founded by artist and spiritual practitioner VULGAR DREAMER, The Black Altar Project works in relationship with Black cultural workers and practitioners whose practices are grounded in lineage and lived experience. The project creates shared environments where people can gather, witness one another, mark transition, and engage practices of cultural remembrance and continuity.
The Black Altar Project centers Black people across gender identities, ages, and spiritual backgrounds. Many participants are encountering these practices in a communal setting for the first time. They arrive seeking clarity or grounding and leave having engaged practices that affirm cultural inheritance and shared presence.
All programming is offered free of charge through public funding and values-aligned partnerships. This reflects a commitment to cultural access and the belief that inherited spiritual knowledge should not be restricted by cost or commodification.
At its core, The Black Altar Project functions as cultural infrastructure. It builds trust, supports collective care, and contributes to the preservation and transmission of Black spiritual traditions as active and relevant components of contemporary cultural life.
